"Diwali" is also called "Diwpavali" festival of lights or "Deepotsav", celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month. The word Deepavali is derived from the Sanskrit 2 words "Deep" meaning lamp and "Avali" meaning series, Diwali is a festival celebrated individually and collectively.


The bigger the festival of Diwali, the fewer people know the true stories about it.
Mainly everyone knows that Diwali is celebrated in the joy of Lord Rama Mata Sita and Lakshmana coming back from Ayodhya exile, apart from this, Diwali also celebrated as Mata Laxmi and Arogya's god Dhanwantri's birth during the sea churning, as a marriage of Mata Laxmi with lord Vishnu, as Nirkasur was killed by Lord Vishnu, as Lord Krishna raise Govardhan mountain to save people from heavy rains due to curse of Lord Indra, as King Bali was killed by Lord Vishnu in the avatar of Vaman Avtaar, as Goddesses Durga killed asuras Shunb & Ashunb in an avatar of Kali, Which most probably did not know until now.

Jainism

According to Jain society, Mahavir Swami, the 24th Tirthankara, had attained salvation on this day, on the day of Kartikeya Amavasya, so the worship of Jain Diwali is different from Hindus.

Sikhism

Diwali is also important for Sikhs as the foundation stone of the Golden Temple was laid in 1577 in Amritsar on the day of Kartik's Amavasya, in addition to this, in 1619, on the day of Diwali, Sikh Guru Hargobind Singh Ji was released from prison.
So, in reality, Sikhs are not celebrating Diwali, they are celebrating "Bandhi Shor" Day, which happens on the same day of the year.

Born in Punjab, Swami Ramatirtha's birthday and Samadhi day both happened on Diwali.

Emperor Vikramaditya's coronation was also held on this day.

 First Day

"Dhanteras"

"Dhan" means money "teras" means the thirteenth day it is on the 13th day of Kartik month. The festival of Diwali begins on the birthday of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari born of Sagar Manthan.




Second day

"Chhoti Diwali" or "Naraka Chaturdashi"

Chaturdashi means fourteenth day, celebrated on 14 days of the month. It is believed that on this day Krishna killed Asura Narakasura.


Third-Day

"Lakshmi Puja"

People of Hinduism do not fast on this festival as is often the case on other festivals. It is believed that on this day, in the joy of Rama, Sita and Lakshman Ji's return from exile, people burnt ghee lamps. According to the belief, Lakshmi travels to the earth on this night, to seek the blessings of the Goddess of Wealth people worship Laxmi. As such, no worship in Hinduism can be complete without worshipping Ganesha, therefore Ganesha and Saraswati along with Lakshmi are also worshiped on this day.




Fourth day

"Ankoot", "Padwa", "Govardhan Puja" or "Bali Pratipad".

It is believed that King Bali was defeated by Vishnu in Vamana avatar on this day.
According to another belief, Parvati defeated Lord Shiva in the game of dice, Shiva was happy and gave the award to Parvati. Therefore, this day the husband considers the wife's bond, in many communities the husband gives gifts to the wife.
Krishna had saved the people from the wrath of heavy rains on this day by raising the mountain, so in many places, people thank Krishna by making a mountain of "grain" or "cow dung".



Fifth day

"Bhai Dooj", "Bhaubij" or "Bai Tika"

It is believed that Yamraj, the god of death, went to his sister on this day and gave her a boon. Therefore this day marks the bond of siblings, brothers go to their sister's house.

Ayodhya

Ayodhya is considered to be the city of Lord Rama hence Diwali is the more popular festival here. In 2018 more than three lakh lamps were lit along the banks of the Saryu River, which is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.



Himachal

1 month after Diwali in Himachal is celebrated another Diwali called "Budhi Deepawali" because when Raja Ram returned to Ayodhya this news came to the people of Himachal after 1 month, so another Diwali is celebrated here which is called buddhi Diwali.



Sindhi community



People of the Sindhi community know Diwali as "Diyari". At the time of Lakshmi Puja, Sindhi people wash gold and silver coins in raw milk. After the puja, each person picks up a coin, and lightly taps the coin against their teeth and translates the phrase "Lakshmi aai, danat wai" which means poverty was overcome with the arrival of Lakshmi.


Maharashtra

People of Maharashtra celebrate Diwali for 4 days. People of Maharashtra make special food items for Diwali, such as Karanji, Laddu, Chakli, and Sev. This feast is known as "Feral" in Maharashtra in every house. Laxmi is worshiped.


Orissa

In Orissa, Diwali is celebrated as the Korean legend, when people burn a stick of jute to help ancestors, who live in heaven, come to Earth for 1 day of Diwali.


Rajasthan

After worshiping in some parts of Rajasthan, first of all, the offerings of sweets are fed to the cat. On this day even if the cat harms, do not beat or chase it away.


Gujarat

Lakshmi Puja in Gujarat is accompanied by Shakti Puja, buying and selling salt in Gujarat is considered auspicious on this day.


Kerala

Kerala is a place where people do not celebrate Diwali to the extent that it is celebrated in other parts of the country.


Tamil Nadu

It is believed in Tamil Nadu that anyone taking oil baths on this day, means he will achieve virtue of like Ganga bathing.


West Bengal

There is a tradition of worshiping mother Kali on Diwali in West Bengal.

Nepal

The Diwali festival in Nepal is known as "Tihar". In Nepal also, this festival is for 5 days. On the first day, crows and calves are worshiped, on the second day, the dog is worshiped for love and loyalty. The third day is celebrated as Lakshmi Puja, the fourth day as New Year and the fifth day as Bhai Tika means Bhai Dooj.




Sri Lanka

Tamil people of Indian origin live in large quantities in Sri Lanka, so this festival gets a glimpse of Indian culture.


Singapore

Singapore's "Little India" looks spectacular during Diwali and with lights, live music concerts and the market for gifts, and Diwali is a public holiday.



Mauritius

Mauritius has a predominantly Hindu population, so Diwali is celebrated with lights and firecrackers like India, here Diwali is a holiday.


America

The festival of Deepawali was celebrated for the first time in 2003 in America's "White House", after which almost the whole of America has adopted this festival.


Australia

In Australia, people of India and Australia gather at a place called "Federation Square" to celebrate Diwali. The attendance of about 50000 people is recorded.




England "UK"

"Leicester" of England celebrates Diwali by lighting the city street, the road is known by the "Golden Mile". Apart from this, the festival is also mainly celebrated in the Swaminarayan temple.


Malaysia

The festival of Diwali is celebrated in Malaysia by people of all religions, which signifies social harmony.
