Guru Nanak Life's 14 Must Know Facts

The man had created religion to increase harmony among each other, but religion has separated man from human beings. Many such great saints have been born in this world in due course of time. One of those who believed in humanity more than religion was Guru Nanak Sahib, the Guru of Sikhs.



The founder of Sikhism, people addressed Guru Nanak Sahib Ji with the names Guru Nanak, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Baba Nanak, and Nanak Shah. He is commonly called Nanak Pir in Afghanistan. He is also known as Nanak Rishi in Nepal, Baba Nanak in Iraq, and Nanak Lama in Tibet. 

Nanak had the qualities of a philosopher, yogi, householder, religious reformer, social reformer, poet, patriot, Vishwa Bandhu all in his personality. 



He was born on 15 April 1469 in the village of Talwandi, situated on the banks of river Ravi, but the prevailing date is Kartik Purnima of October-November, was born in a Khatri clan which was a Hindu family, Talwandi was later called Nanakana in the name of Nanak. which is now in Pakistan. His father's name was Kalyan Chand Mehta or Kalu Ji who was a Patwari (Govt. Accountant), mother's name was Tripta Devi. Nanak was named after his elder sister Nanaki. Guru Nanak's grandfather in the family was Sri Shivram, grandmother Banaras, and uncle Lalu.


Gurunanak also had a good knowledge of Sindhi, Persian and Arabic languages.

Childhood of Guru Nanak 

He was of serious instinct since childhood, his father sent him to Pandit Hardayal to study but Panditji had no answer for the questions of Balak Nanak and understood from his knowledge that God himself sent Nanak to the world. 


Seeing the scene of a snake shadowing Nanak's head in childhood, Rai Bulaar became Natmastak ( Bowed ), who was the ruler of the village. 


Not wear Janeu

When he was a child he did not wear a sacred thread called Janeu. He gave a reason that he would bear God's true name in his heart for his protection. He believed that the thread could break or be lost but God would be forever.   




True deal ('Sacha Sauda'.) 

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji was 12 years old, his father gave him twenty rupees and asked him to do business. But Guru Nanak Dev Ji bought food with all the money and distributed it among the saints, and the poor. When his father asked him what happened to the business? He replied that he had made a "true deal". A gurudwara was built at the place where Guru Nanak Dev fed the poor, its name is 'Sacha Sauda'. 



Teaching in Haridwar 

Once Nanak was standing on the banks of the Ganges and he saw some people standing inside the water and pouring water on the sun, looking for the peace of their ancestors in heaven. Guru Nanak also started pouring water with both hands, standing towards his state Punjab. Seeing this, people asked why he was doing this, Nanak replied - If the water of Ganga Mata can reach your ancestors in heaven, then why can't it reach my fields in Punjab because Punjab is close to heaven. 



Married life of Nanak 

He was married at the age of sixteen to the daughter of Moola, Sulakhani. At the age of 32, his first son Srichand was born. Four years later another son Lakhmidas was born. Sri Chand became the founder of the Udasi Dharma. 

After the birth of both the boys, in 1507, Nanak with Mardana, Lahna, Bala, and Ramdas left for pilgrimage with these four companions. 



Journeys of Guru Nanak (Udasis) 

Guru Nanak was saddened by the plight of mankind as the world was fast falling prey to the wickedness of Kal Yuga. Therefore, the Guru decided to travel to the subcontinent. Guru Nanak is believed to have made five trips (Udasis) in his life, spent 24 years in his journey, and traveled 28,000 kilometers on foot. 

His teaching prominently included three things; ‘Vanda Chakko’, ‘Kirat Karo’ and ‘Naam Japna’. 

Vanda Chakko involves sharing with others, not exploiting anyone in Kirat Karo, and meditating on the name of God in 'Naam Japna'. 

Guru Nanak is one of the most important religious gurus contributing to women's empowerment in India. Guru Nanak appealed to respect women.

Guru invented the Langar 

Guru Nanak Dev Ji started langar as a child 500 years ago. Every Gurudwara in the world has an open kitchen that distributes free food every day, all day, to all irrespective of age or condition. All small and big, rich and poor eat food in the same line in Langar.



The secret of Gurdwara Retha Sahib 

When Guru was going to Benaras, Mardane said on the way, Maharaj, I am very hungry. At that time Guru Ji was resting under the tree of Rithe. The Guru looked over the tree and said to Mardana, fall down Rithe and eat. When Mardana ate Rithe, they were as sweet as a date palm. 

The Rithe’s of this tree is still sweet, which is 45 miles away from Nanak Matte. 


The secret of Gurudwara Ber Sahib 

Sultanpur Lodhi (Kapurthala) When Guru Nanak was sitting on the banks of the river Ben with his Sakha Mardane, he suddenly dived into the river and went missing for three days, where he interviewed Ishwar. When he returned, he said- Ek Omkar Satnam. 

Guru Nanak sowed a plum seed there, which has become a very big tree today. 



The secret of Gurudwara Panja Sahib 

Gurudwara Panja Sahib is 48 km from Rawalpindi in Pakistan. It is said that once Guru Nanak Dev Ji was in meditation, Vali Kandhari threw a huge stone from the top of the mountain to Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Ji raised his paw and the stone stopped there in the air. 

The stone still exists in the Gurudwara Sri Panja Sahib, it also has the palm marks of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on it. That is why the Gurudwara was named 'Panja Sahib'.   



The secret of Gurudwara Kandh Sahib 

After walking from Sultanpur Lodhi, Nanak Dev's Marriage procession reached Batala, the procession stopped at this place. In the morning, when the procession started going forward, the wall started falling, so Guruji put his hand and stopped the wall from falling. 

Even today the wall stands like that. The Gurudwara Kandh Sahib has been established here. This wall is still locked in a glass at Gurdwara Kandha Sahib, Gurdaspur Punjab.   


Nanak at Mecca Guru 

Nanak Dev once traveled to Mecca and was seated with his feet towards the holy place. Maulvi (highly qualified scholars of Islam) came running and shouted at him to set foot towards the abode of God. 
Maulvi grabbed Nanak's feet and mounted them. In whatever manner the Maulvi rotated Nanak's feet, he saw that Mecca stood by Nanak's feet. 

The Guru's purpose behind the entire incident was to make the Maulvi realize that there is no particular place where God is located, he is omnipresent and lives within


   
A lesson to Malik Bhago ( a dishonest person ) 

On reaching Saidpur city, Guruji preferred to stay at the house of a poor carpenter named Bhai Lalo instead of Malik Bhago. When Malik Bhago asked him the reason, the Guru replied that he was a dishonest person, To prove his point, the Guru took two different loaves in both hands and squeezed

The blood came from the bread of Malik Bhago, While milk came out of Brother Lalo's bread. Thus Malik Bhago realized his mistake and spent the rest of his life with integrity.   



The secret of Kartarpur Gurdwara and Missile    

After completing his travels, Nanak settled in Kartarpur in the year 1522, here only he founded Sikhism. After his death, a gurudwara was built here in his memory. 
There is a well inside the gurudwara. It is believed that this well is from the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. 

A piece of the missile has also been saved in the mirror near the well. It is said that this missile bomb fell here in the 1971 war, but not a crack, which is no less than a miracle. 



The death 

When Guru Nanak reached his last days, a debate broke out between Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs as to who should be honored for performing the last rites. All decided to ask Guru Nanak himself what should be done. The Guru asked them to bring flowers and place them next to their mortal remains. Those whose flowers remain fresh throughout the night will perform my last rites. After his death, everyone did the same. 
But in the morning the next day, all their flowers were fresh and everyone was surprised that the mortal remains of the Guru had disappeared, only the place had fresh flowers all raised and buried their flowers.  



Before his death, he appointed Bhai Lena as his successor and changed his name to Guru Angad.
